What should I give/take for ADHD (both kids and adults)

This depends entirely on the individual’s symptoms and needs. Consult with a health practitioner. Some have suggested that L-methylfolate, NAC, and EPA (typically from Omega 3s) can all help with brain health. Learn more...>>

What should I take if my B12 is high? (or low)

This depends on whether you have high/low serum B12 or high/low RBC B12.

An RBC blood test will show you more accurate levels of B12 status, along with an MMA (methylmalonic acid) test to determine if there is sufficiency or deficiency.

What should I take (regarding homocysteine)

High homocysteine levels may be caused by several factors, including genetic mutations in the MTHFR gene, deficiencies in vitamins B6, B12, and folate, as well as certain medical conditions and lifestyle factors.

To treat high homocysteine, it is recommended to supplement with methylfolate, which is the active form of folate that bypasses MTHFR gene mutations. Methylfolate helps to lower homocysteine levels by supporting the body's methylation processes. In combination with methylcobalamin, P-5-P (active B6), NAC, TMG, and glutathione it is even more efficient at reducing high homocysteine levels. We advise consulting with a healthcare professional to determine the specific dosage you may need for these nutrients and to address any underlying causes contributing to high homocysteine. What should I take for histamine (issues)

High histamine levels may be linked to a range of factors, including allergies, histamine intolerance, certain medications, and underlying health conditions like mast cell disorders.

To treat high histamine, it is advisable to follow a low-histamine diet, which means limiting or avoiding histamine-rich foods and beverages.

Antihistamine medications are often prescribed to help alleviate symptoms, but these may have unpleasant side effects. A natural alternative is quercetin, a flavonoid with antihistamine properties. DAO is another option that helps degrade histamine in the body (it particularly helps when histamine producing foods are eaten). Another thing to be aware of is methylation, when the body is methylating well, histamine has a pathway to be metabolized, however, some have a hard time with methylation and can benefit from L-methylfolate and other methylation-producing nutrients. Please consult with a healthcare professional to determine the underlying cause of high histamine levels and to tailor a treatment plan to your specific needs. Learn more...>>

The vitamins made me feel sick - what does this mean? What should I do?

Stop taking the vitamins and monitor your symptoms. If you improve, it could be that there is something in the product that isn't working for you. See a health professional and show them what you have been taking.

It's worth noting that over-methylation can occur for some when taking excess methylfolate and methylation-promoting nutrients. In thee cases it may be necessary to reduce intake of such nutrients and consider supporting your body's ability to metabolize methyl donors. NAC, nicotinic acid, and glutathione all support over-methylation symptoms and reactions.

What should I do for COMT?

A COMT genetic mutation can affect the way your body processes the neurotransmitters dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. Supplements that may be beneficial for individuals with a COMT mutation are those that support neurotransmitter balance and methylation processes, including methylated forms of B vitamins, such as methylfolate (5-MTHF), methylcobalamin (B12), and pyridoxal-5-phosphate (B6). These nutrients can help optimize methylation pathways and support the breakdown of neurotransmitters. Additionally, supplements like SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) and magnesium may also assist with methylation and overall neurotransmitter function. NAC can also modulate several major neurotransmitter systems such as glutamate.

Which B12 is best for me based on my mutations?

For those with MTHFR genetic mutations, it is generally recommended to use active forms of B12 such as methylcobalamin, hydroxocobalamin, and adenosylcobalamin. These forms can bypass the MTHFR enzyme and support methylation processes more effectively. They are readily utilized by the body and can help compensate for potential deficiencies or impaired conversion of other forms of B12.

Methyl-Life’s® B12 Complete was the first B12 supplement developed to provide all three of these forms together in one product.

How do I return unopened products?

Please email us at support@methyl-life.com to let us know that you'd like to return your product so we can prepare to receive it, and then send unopened products along with their packing slips to us at:  Methyl-Life® - P.O. Box 33606, Seattle, WA 98133

Can I return opened products? Why not?

We do not accept open bottles as returns - similarly to a grocery store not allowing you to return an open can of beans that you decided you didn't like the taste of. All of the nutrients are clearly labeled with form types and amounts on our website and we do rigorous third party testing through reputable labs on every single batch we produce, so we know the products are "as formulated" and free from metals and microbes, etc.

We believe it's up to you to do your diligence before purchasing any nutrient-based products. Please feel free to ask us any questions prior to purchasing, we'll be happy to give you our best information and suggestions. We will not try to "sell" you something that's not right for you. But we also recognize that which is true for any dietary supplement product, not every nutrient is going to work for every person. Sometimes with our biochemistry, we simply have to experiment with nutrients/products to determine if they will improve our symptoms/health and achieve our goals or not. We make no guarantees that our products will affect symptoms in any specific way. We are a science-based company and simply point to the research we've discovered (and worked with doctors to understand). We use this to highlight which nutrients have worked well in particular studies, according to doctors' findings and then let you make up your own mind about whether or not that's right for you.

How long will it take the product to ship to me? (International and USA)

Within the USA the product wait time is typically 3-6 days post order as we currently ship via USPS First Class. We typically take 24 hours to prepare and package your order, then the USPS shipping time is 3-5 days depending upon how far away you are from the fulfillment house, which is currently located in WA state. Some orders placed early in the day could possibly see a 2-day arrival time if they are not far from the fulfillment house, but this is rare.

International orders are much more challenging and we're looking to explore new ways to serve international customers in future. Unfortunately international orders have become very expensive to ship due to inflation all over the globe right now. We have been using USPS for shipments to help save international customers money, but through them we only have tracking until the packages leave the country, which means, if the package gets lost, we have no way of helping the customer find it. The shipments that do make it to their destinations have taken much longer than we (and the customers) had hoped, so unfortunately we don't currently have a solid international sales approach in place. We hope to improve this in future.

How does your product compare to Deplin?

Deplin® and the Methyl-Life® range are both brands that offer L-methylfolate, the active form of folate in 7.5 mg and 15 mg "free methylfolate" dosage amounts.

However, Deplin® is a prescription medication, using Metafolin® as its active form of methylfolate. It is primarily used as an adjunctive treatment for individuals with depression or certain mental health conditions who have demonstrated a suboptimal response to antidepressant medications.

Methyl-Life® offers a range of methylfolate products which are available over-the-counter (without a prescription). Our supplements are designed to support overall health and address potential methylation issues associated with MTHFR genetic mutations. Most importantly, the form of methylfolate used in Methyl-Life® products is Magnafolate® PRO, which has been tested as one of the purest forms of methylfolate available.

Are you 3rd party tested?

Yes! But not only that, we go above and beyond the industry standard which tends to employ "skip batch" testing. This means that every time a test comes back within the approved/expected range, the manufacturer or retailer assumes that if the formula and ingredients will not change, then likely neither will the testing results of the final product formula. So they then resolve to skip a bunch of production batches and only test every 10th or 20th batch (or whatever the "skip interval number" is that they decide to use).

But not at Methyl-Life®, we want you to feel confident in every single batch we have produced, so post production we send samples from every batch to a reputable 3rd party lab that tests for us to ensure the potency is as we've formulated (and expect) it to be (as our label indicates it is). So as our customer, you know you're getting exactly what you paid for (and that we've verified it for you through an independent 3rd party).

Where are your products manufactured?

All Methyl-Life® products are manufactured in FDA registered and audited, cGMP compliant facilities. Most of the products come out of manufacturing facilities that have gone above and beyond industry standards to become NSF certified as well (which carries an additional high set of SOPs [standard operating procedures] ensuring excellence in the final products. Extra money and time goes into carrying this level of certification, but it's designed to make customers feel more confident in the high quality standard of such facilities due to all of the additional 3rd party rigor that's designed around the production process).

What certifications do you have?

Our manufacturers are FDA registered and audited, cGMP compliant and NSF certified.

What allergens are in your products?

Most Methyl-Life® products contain no wheat, gluten, soy, dairy, egg, fish/shellfish, yeast, nuts, starch, caffeine, artificial colorings, preservatives or artificial flavoring, bisphenol-A (BPA), or phthalate. Our multivitamin products contain small amounts of beeswax and lanolin-derived constituents so they are not considered vegan.

How do I know if I am overmethylating?

The concept of overmethylation is still under debate within the scientific and medical community. While methylation is a vital biochemical process, there is limited scientific evidence supporting the existence of a clear-cut condition called "overmethylation" or its associated symptoms. Some naturopathic doctors have proposed that overmethylation can occur when there is excessive methylation activity in the body, leading to imbalances in neurotransmitters and other physiological processes. While there is limited scientific research specifically on overmethylation, some suggestions include elevated levels of certain metabolites, such as SAMe, methionine, or homocysteine, as well as symptoms such as anxiety, restlessness, irritability, and insomnia. However, it is important to note that these indicators are not definitive proof of overmethylation and can be influenced by various factors.

The complexity of methylation pathways and the numerous factors that influence them make it challenging to define and diagnose overmethylation as a distinct condition. It is important to approach the topic with caution and consult with healthcare professionals regarding your own symptoms. See "What do I do if I am overmethylating?"

How do I know if I am undermethylating?

Undermethylation (also known as hypomethylation) is a decrease in DNA methylation. It is associated with several conditions, including cancer, congenital disorders, autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, and aging. Some research suggests that hypomethylation can contribute to chromosomal instability, loss of imprinting, and decreased transcriptional activity of certain genes involved in stem cell maintenance and differentiation. DNA hypomethylation has been linked to atherosclerosis and altered smooth muscle cell proliferation, which can contribute to atherosclerotic lesions.

Global hypomethylation refers to a decrease in methylation levels across the entire genome, while gene-specific hypomethylation involves the reduced methylation of specific genes. Both types of hypomethylation have been observed in various diseases and can have significant effects on gene expression and cellular functions.

As research into the relationship between DNA methylation patterns and disease states continues, it is important to note that hypomethylation is not a standalone diagnostic factor and is often observed alongside other molecular alterations and environmental factors. Impaired methylation or undermethylation may result in a lack of the components needed to generate neurotransmitters such as serotonin and dopamine, which are essential for healthy mood. Symptoms of undermethylation may therefore include depression, obsessive-compulsive tendencies, seasonal allergies, elevated body temperature. Our blog explains more about health conditions related to impaired methylation.

What do I do if I am undermethylating?

Improving DNA methylation may involve nutritional intervention with methylfolate, methylcobalamin and methionine.

Folate plays a crucial role in providing methyl groups for the methylation reactions necessary for gene regulation and cellular function. Ensuring sufficient folate intake through diet or supplementation with methylfolate is important for supporting proper DNA methylation and preventing undermethylation-related complications. Methylcobalamin (active B12) and aspyridoxal-5-phosphate (P5P or active B6) are also crucial nutrients that work alongside folate in the methionine-homocysteine pathway to maintain normal concentrations of homocysteine.

Other factors such as genetic variations, lifestyle, and environmental factors can also influence methylation patterns. Individual variations in folate metabolism and methylation processes may exist, and the impact of folate on DNA methylation can vary among individuals. Consulting with a healthcare professional or registered dietitian can provide personalized guidance based on your specific health needs.

If I send you my genetic report, can you tell me what to take?

If our support team has some bandwidth we can sometimes provide some basic information around testing results for MTHFR and some other related genetics here and there. This is not a comprehensive or specific service we provide, but in some cases we can offer some insights or point you in a helpful direction. If you wish to have a more comprehensive assessment, an email or zoom consultation with a Naturopathic practitioner is what we'd suggest, and we can facilitate that service and connection for you for a fee. The practitioner can help go over your genetics report with you and help you determine what's best to take based on your specific results, other blood &/or medical tests as well as your symptoms.

Do you offer consultations?

At this time we do not officially offer consultations, though we strive to answer all the questions our customers send us and we will always do our best to give you as much information as we can.

What time of day should I take my supplement?

This depends on the supplement itself.

B vitamins are best taken in the morning as they play essential roles in energy metabolism, nerve function, and the production of neurotransmitters. This can have an energizing effect on the body, contributing to alertness.

Starting the day with your B vitamins allows you to get the most out of these vitamins throughout the day. They can help support energy levels, mental focus, and overall vitality. Alternatively, some practitioners recommend taking divided doses (e.g., morning and mid-day). This helps to maintain a steady level of folate in the bloodstream throughout the day.

Should I take the supplements with food?

Water-soluble vitamins - folate, thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B6, and vitamin B12, and vitamin C - can be taken with or without food.

Fat-soluble vitamins - A, D, E, and K - are absorbed and transported in a manner similar to that of fats, so they should be taken with a meal.

Some people find that certain nutrients can cause stomach upset when taken on an empty stomach (i.e. zinc), so if you notice stomach upset when you take a nutrient on an empty stomach, consider trying it with food before you give up on it entirely.

Are you products vegan?

Yes mostly, and no. Most Methyl-Life® products contain NO animal-derived substances, however, our multivitamins contain small amounts of beeswax and lanolin-derived constituents, so they are not considered 100% vegan. They are vegetarian, gluten free, and dairy free.

What is the difference between L-Methylfolate and folate?

The main difference between L-methylfolate and folate lies in their chemical forms and how they are utilized by the body. Folate is the generic term for a group of naturally occurring B-vitamins, while L-Methylfolate is the active, bioavailable form of folate the body can immediately absorb and use for its important downstream health processes.

Folate obtained from dietary sources or supplements needs to undergo several enzymatic conversions in the body before it can be utilized. L-Methylfolate, on the other hand, is already in the active form, which means it bypasses these conversion steps and can be directly absorbed and utilized by the body. This makes L-Methylfolate a more readily available and effective form of folate, particularly for individuals with certain genetic variations or conditions that impair the conversion process (i.e. DHFR & MTHFR).

Are your products L-Methylfolate? Why doesn't it say that on the label?

All of Methyl-Life’s® methylfolate products contain pure L-methylfolate. L-methylfolate is a short name for the chemical form of folate denoted as: L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate. The FDA requires that dietary supplements containing methylfolate list it under the "folate umbrella labeling guidelines", which are subject to DFE calculations (this stands for dietary folate equivalent).

What is the difference between Magnafolate® PRO, Magnafolate® C, and Cerebrofolate™?

Magnafolate® PRO, Magnafolate® C, and Cerebrofolate™ are all patented, crystallized forms of L-5-Methyltetrahydrofolate Calcium Salt.

Magnafolate® is a ~98-99% pure form of L-methylfolate (only the (6S)/L isomer in the ingredient). It is also a calcium salt-based crystalline form and is extremely stable. It has a ~78% “free methylfolate” absorption rate, which means that 1 mg of raw Magnafolate® equals approximately 0.78 mg of the active L-methylfolate (bioactive “free methylfolate”) that can be absorbed by your body.

Cerebrofolate™, on the other hand, is a crystalline calcium salt form of L-methylfolate. It comprises >=80% “free methylfolate”, while L-5-MTHF glucosamine comprises only ~52% “free methylfolate”. This makes Cerebrofolate™ the most potent L-methylfolate on the market today. Ingesting just 1 mg of the raw ingredient provides at least 0.80 mg of absorbable L-methylfolate.

What products are non methylated?

Methyl-Life’s® Non-Methylated Multivitamin with Cognitive Nutrients contains no methylated nutrients. It is designed to be taken alongside a customized dose of methylfolate and/or prescribed Vitamin B12.

What products are chewable vs capsule?

All of Methyl-Life’s® methylfolate products are chewable, including the Chewable Methylated Multi, most of the methylfolate tablets as well as the Active B12 products.

The Gut Health 4 in 1, Sucrosomial Magnesium®, MitoQ, Focus and Recall, Methylfolate 15+ and probiotics are all capsules.

Why do you have 2 different multivitamins? What is the difference?

I don't understand MTHFR or the website - can you tell me what to order?

Is there a support group I can join? (Facebook group)

Can you recommend a doctor?

We have found that naturopathic and functional medicine doctors seem to have the most knowledge about MTHFR and its effects on the body. They seem to be most aware of how to use nutrition to supplement around some of these significant challenges. Though we do not have a specific list of doctors to share, we encourage you to ask them if they're aware of methylation and how it affects the body as well as MTHFR and what can be done to treat it. If they don't understand what you're talking about, then move on until you find a doctor that understands how important it is. That will likely be a doctor that has at least some level of experience treating other people who deal with the kinds of issues you're working to manage.

Where can I buy an MTHFR Test? How do I get tested?

Testing options for MTHFR include:

Healthcare provider: Consult with your doctor/primary care physician, or a local hospitals or clinical genetics center. They can assess your medical history, symptoms, and family history to determine if genetic testing for MTHFR mutations is appropriate. They can also guide you through the testing process and sometimes help you interpret the results.

Genetic testing laboratories: Many reputable genetic testing laboratories offer MTHFR genetic testing directly to consumers. These companies provide test kits that can be ordered online, which involves sending a sample (usually saliva or cheek swab) to the laboratory for analysis. Some options include 23andMe, AncestryDNA, Genetic Genie, Doctor's Data, MyHeritage DNA, etc. Google may be able to help you determine which test is best for you based on some comparison data between the various companies.

Can I take the vitamins if I don't have MTHFR?

Of course. Methyl-Life’s® supplement range is designed to optimize overall health and wellbeing for anyone, whether you have MTHFR or simply require some extra nutritional support.

Why doesn't my doctor know about MTHFR?

While many doctors are familiar with MTHFR genetic mutations, it is possible that their broad medical training has not covered the relatively specific area of MTHFR mutations. The understanding of genetic variations, including MTHFR mutations, has only become more widely known in recent years. Some doctors may not be up-to-date with the latest research and clinical implications of MTHFR mutations.

My doctor told me to take folic acid - can I just take folic acid?

Individuals with MTHFR genetic mutations are often advised to avoid taking folic acid and instead opt for methylfolate supplementation. This is because MTHFR mutations can reduce the activity of the MTHFR enzyme, which is responsible for converting folic acid into its active form, 5-MTHF (methylfolate). This can lead to reduced efficiency in converting folic acid to the usable form and lower levels of active folate in the body.

In addition, folic acid that has not been properly converted can accumulate in the bloodstream as unmetabolized folic acid. High levels of unmetabolized folic acid have been associated with certain health concerns as well as masking of vitamin B12 deficiency.

My doctor told me MTHFR is not an issue for me: is this true?

A doctor would need to know whether or not you have the MTHFR genetic mutation (through genetic testing) before he or she can say that MTHFR is not an issue for you.

There is a lot of research available on pubmed that points to the fact that MTHFR is in fact an impactful mutation that does often affect people's health and wellbeing as well as contributes to a number of negative symptoms.

If a doctor says MTHFR is not an issue related to health, then we are in disagreement and we believe that simply means such a doctor may not be up on their research and knowledge of the real and related issues.

Any place I can learn about factor v Leiden and mthfr homozygous?
