How Does Our Memory Work?
Memory is a cognitive process that involves many different steps: encoding, consolidation, recovery, and reconsolidation.
Simply put: your brain acquires or ‘learns’ information through what you see, hear, smell, and feel. This sensory stimuli is then converted into a format that can be processed and retained within neurons (brain cells) so it can be accessed and retrieved later.1
The way information is obtained and stored can be affected by several factors, including how often you are exposed to it, your attention span, and its emotional significance. Lifestyle factors such as sleep, stress, and the function of various neurotransmitters can also influence memory consolidation.2
Retrieving memories involves activating specific neural pathways while reconstructing encoded information. As with memory storage, the retrieval process can be affected by many factors: the cues you receive and your familiarity with the material, or inadequate cues that impair your ability to recall the information.
