In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, maintaining a healthy body and an effective immune system has never been more important. With the right habits, we can find a way to get through this and eventually work our way back into a more normal quality of life. 

We’ve all heard about the sanitary concerns that we need to take into consideration daily. 

Washing our hands conscientiously, having hand sanitizer handy, avoiding contact with your face, keeping a safe distance from others, and maintaining a clean home are some of the best ways to keep the coronavirus away from you and your family.

In addition to paying more attention to our sanitation, this is a great opportunity to finally take control of your other lifestyle habits that will help you stay coronavirus-free. Since our immune system will play a large role in fighting off disease, maintaining a healthy diet will be just as important as keeping a clean home. 

Many of us are going to have a lot of “home” time on our hands during the lockdown. This should eliminate many excuses we tend to make about not paying attention to our daily nutrition and diet.

While we don’t know how long we’ll be dealing with a lockout, taking control of our health now will make us stronger people by the time we’ve moved into a safer place.

  • Exhale and Breathe - When we’re stressed, we release more cortisol which taxes our bodies and eats up resources that we’d rather have available to our immune systems for fighting off any kind of viruses or bugs we might be exposed to. So consider a mindfulness practice that allows you to stay focused on the positive things and not get sucked too deeply into the fear and panic that the media might be sensationalizing.
  • Get Vitamin D - Be sure you are supplementing with Vitamin D3 if your levels are low. If you live in a northern state, it may likely be low due to a lack of sunshine exposure. Stats say approximately 40% of the population is low in Vitamin D. If you can supplement with Vitamin D, you may be helping your immune system and by reducing the risk of respiratory infection, viruses and influenza.  
  • Stock Up - You’d be surprised at all the healthy foods that can be frozen and saved for later. Fruits, vegetables, bread, and meat can all be stocked in your freezer for weeks or months. 
  •  Avoid Frequent Trips - One of the benefits of stocking up is that you won’t need to visit the supermarket nearly as often. That will be in your best interest during this outbreak.
  • Meal Plan - This is a great time to introduce yourself and your family to meal planning. Have a fun night with the family and cook enough meals for the next few days so you have more time to spend having fun in the house!
  • Avoid Eating Out - While some restaurants are still providing drive-thru services and delivery, why even tempt yourself? Focus on the healthy foods you’ve stocked up on, your body will thank you!
  • Multivitamins - Purchase a quality multivitamin to start taking daily to ensure your body is getting the necessary nutrients it needs every day. When combined with your healthy diet, your immune system will grow stronger. Be sure Vitamin A, D, E, Zinc, and Selenium are all in your multivitamin.
  • Vitamins C & Magnesium - To get plenty of C and Magnesium, you might want to get separate vitamins for those two big ones (you will usually need much more than what tends to get put into a multivitamin in order for these two powerhouses to serve you well).
  • Exercise - Do some home exercises with your family in the living room. It’s a great way to stay active and build up your immune system while gyms and schools are closed.
  • Consider immune-boosting botanicals - like Astragalas, Echinacea, Elderberry, Olive Leaf, Oregano, Garlic, Mushrooms (Chaga, Cordyceps, Reishi, Shiitake).

Do things that bring joy (believe it or not, this actually positively affects the immune system) - laugh out loud, plan a dance party, enjoy with your pet, relax, play a game, express yourself (paint/draw/write/etc.), connect with those you love.
